VIDEO Kung Fu Panda 4 Who's in it: take a look

This spring, for the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious, butt-kicking new chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4.

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who really gets under Po’s fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

Starring

Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, Ian McShane and Ke Huy Quan

Love & Latte launch: A feast for the eyes, both on and off the screen

Love & Latte launch: A feast for the eyes, both on and off the screen

They call it the Red Bulb. It is a preview theatre, located on the third floor of a high-profile building, off Link Road, Andheri West. The invitation said 6.30 pm. Traffic jams made sure I reached at 7.15 pm. Too early. Things started moving at 9 pm, and went on until almost 11 pm. A little too long for the launch of a music video, which was projected thrice. Shot in Azerbaijaan, with a Sydney Opera House look-alike in the back-ground, there was lots of Love, and several cups of Latte, and attractive, picture-post-card locales. Latte was served by Sharad Malhotra, with a complimentary rose, and Love blossomed in the heart of Arlin Maitra.

Arlin is the proprietor of Omcar Records, which is the label on which the single has been released. She is the producer (or ghost producer) of the song, Love and Latte. She is an actress and model. She is pretty. She is vivacious, she is dynamic and at 26, she is creating ripples. Crack this puzzle: what is it that rhymes with ripples? Arlin cracked it, and her daring costume did not let the audience’s gaze waver even for a second. They often say that an actress looks hot in certain costumes, and they say this about actresses who draw the ‘line’ at certain spots, some a centimetre less, some a centimetre more. And there is Arlin, who re-defined what the meaning of ‘hot’ really is.

On screen, though, she was more conservatively dressed, with a wardrobe that matches the exotic interiors. It all begins when Arlin orders a latte at the café at which Sharad works, and latte follows latte, leading to lovtte, lots of love. The Punjabi-based song waxes eloquent, courtesy some emotive singing from Altamash Faridi, about their love and each other’s imagination, as they keep appearing and disappearing on screen. What really kindles their love is not clear (surely the hot coffee was not the aphrodisiac! Maybe it was the rose that came with it), but Arlin is so smitten that she calls her mother and breaks her engagement, in order to marry the coffee-man.

Arlin is Bengali, and effectively tri-lingual, speaking Hindi and English too, with ease. She had golden (auburn?) dyed hair and has an indulgent smile. Arts, including acting and music, have always been Arlin's passions. "After dabbling in modelling and acting. I turned to my other passion, music. "Music is something that we all love. When I knew music is that something I live for, I needed to be a part of this industry. Being an actress, it was easy for me to give the vocals a visual representation."

Added co-star Sharad Malhotra, "Love & Latte was one amazing experience. Lush locales, amazing team, great producer and costar and a winning song; what more can one ask for!"

From the team, Saahil Goradia of Sumeet-Saahil, Palash Dutta, Hrishikesh Pandey, Neel Motwani, Aditya Bhansali and Sushweta Tewary were also present.

As I left the venue, the Red Bulb was blushing shocking pink. And I was wondering how I missed this beautiful location on my 2022 visit to Azerbaijaan.

FROM MY LIVING ROOM TO THE HEART OF CINEMA

Cinematography has always been more than just a component of filmmaking; it's an art form that deeply resonates with me, speaking directly to the soul. My journey into the world of cinematography began not in a theater or studio, but in my own living room, with classic films painting stories through light and shadow. This personal exploration has led me to appreciate the intricate art of visual storytelling.

One film that profoundly impacted my understanding of cinematography was "Blade Runner 2049," where every frame was a visual masterpiece. The way Roger Deakins, the cinematographer, used light and color to create mood and atmosphere was nothing short of breathtaking. The orange hues of the toxic Las Vegas skyline and the stark, cold interiors of the Wallace Corporation spoke volumes without a single word being uttered.

Another cinematic experience that left an indelible mark on me was "The Revenant." The natural lighting and long, unbroken takes crafted by Emmanuel Lubezki brought an unparalleled level of authenticity and immersion. The harsh, unforgiving landscape became a character in itself, shaping the story and the characters' journey through it.

"1917," another film shot by Roger Deakins, showcased the power of cinematography in storytelling with its seemingly one continuous shot. This technique immersed me in the journey of the characters, making their mission feel more urgent and real. The way the camera moved with the characters, navigating the trenches and battlefields, created an intense, personal experience that stayed with me long after the film ended.

Wong Kar-wai's "In the Mood for Love," shot by Christopher Doyle, is another film that demonstrates the emotive power of cinematography. The use of color, tight framing, and slow motion created a palpable sense of longing and unspoken emotion between the characters. The visuals were so rich and evocative that they almost felt like a separate language, telling their own story alongside the dialogue and narrative.

These films, among many others, have deepened my appreciation for the art of cinematography. They've shown me how the camera can be much more than a recording device; it can be a painter's brush, a poet's pen, or an extension of the storyteller's heart and mind. Each of these cinematographers has a unique vision and style, yet they all share the ability to transform script into visual poetry.

My personal journey through the art of cinematography has not only heightened my appreciation for the craft but also for those behind the camera. These visionaries don't just see the world; they understand how to capture it in a way that resonates with viewers, turning a good story into an unforgettable visual experience. They are the unsung heroes whose creativity and skill shape our emotional response to the film.

As cinematography continues to evolve with technology, new tools and techniques constantly emerge, offering even broader canvases for creative expression. Yet, at its heart, cinematography remains what it has always been to me: a powerful means of storytelling, where visual elements are masterfully woven together to evoke emotions and breathe life into narratives.

Continuing my journey through the ever-evolving landscape of cinematography, I'm constantly reminded of that initial awe and the ongoing fascination that has shaped my understanding and love for films. It's a journey that teaches me to see not just with my eyes but with my heart, and I eagerly anticipate where it will lead me next. This exploration isn't just a personal indulgence; it's an invitation to all film lovers to look deeper and appreciate the subtle art that turns movies into experiences

Argylle, Review: Spyurious stuff

Argylle, Review: Spyurious stuff

Don’t even try. To make sense of this one. It’s a tribute to James Bond, Jason Bourne, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon. That is what the makers want you to believe. Well, it’s one tribute the ‘quartet’ can do without. There is a cat in the film, getting a fair amount of footage. Maybe that’s a tribute to Solomon, the cat of the Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who appears in several 007 films, a white, blue-eyed Turkish Angora. In Argylle, it is a Scottish Fold cat, named Alfie, which belongs to the protagonist, a female novelist who has been a spy. There is so much back story to the heroine that you desperately want the film to get back to the story. Instead, it takes you on a tour of Europe and America, not to mention HongKong and some part of Arabia. And yet, Argylle misses its target by a mylle.

Elizabeth ‘Elly’ Conway is a reclusive spy author (if spies are reclusive by definition, what’s wrong with a spy author being so?). She writes about a Super Spy called Aubrey Argylle. And each of the four novels she has written have turned out be bestsellers. But there is a problem. Her plots of international espionage turn out to be predictive and prophetic. What she writes, actually happens. On a train journey (Elly has a fear of flying) to visit her parents, she is suddenly attacked a horde of men, and miraculously saved by the man sitting next to her, who reveals himself to be Aidan Wylde, a real-life spy, and a fan of hers. He tells her that she was attacked by the Division, because of the prophetic nature of her writing.

Aidan accompanies Elly to London, where, he hopes, she will lead them to the MasterKey, and thus put paid to the plans of the Division. Not sure of Aidan’s intentions, Elly calls her parents, who turn out to be Dr. Margaret Vogeler (Ruth) and Director Ritter (Barry), the bosses at the Division, who had assumed the identities of Elly’s parents when she was in their captivity, suffering from amnesia and semi-conscious. Aidan and Elly manage to dodge them and escape to France, where they meet former CIA Deputy Director, Alfie. ‘Alfie’ is short for Alfred, and has no connection with Elly’s cat, Alfie, which she takes around wherever she goes. Alfie tells Elizabeth that Argylle is derived from her real name, which is R. (Rachel) Kylle. And soon, it is all guns blazing, as the good guys try to get rid of the Division (did I hear them call it the Directorate, on a couple of occasions?).

Convoluted is a word that readily comes to mind when I look at the script by actor-writer Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift, Pan and Wonder Woman. By comparison, this is the first 'realistic' script coming from him, the others being about a legend, a super heroine and animation. Perhaps the complications arise from his desire to go overboard, in an attempt to impress. Giving the cat so much prominence, for only two worthwhile scenes, is irrational. Elizabeth Conway’s many incarnations are always two-steps ahead of the audience’s intellect. Train attacks have been filmed many times in earlier films, and cannot get much better. Why cannot spy film writers think beyond a pen-drive? And what a colossal waste of the likes of Henry Cavill (Superman, Mission Impossible, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), who is seen in apparitions by Conway, each one just a few seconds long, as the Argylle in print. One tends to agree with director Matthew Vaughn that Cavill is Bond material, but is this how you treat Bond material?

Is Matthew Vaughn the son of actor Robert Vaughn? No, says a paternity test. It is a bit complicated, like Argylle, but his full name(s) is/are Matthew Allard de Vere Drummond (born Matthew Allard Robert Vaughn; 7 March 1971), and is known as Matthew Vaughn, professionally. Many of us know him as Kingsman or King’s Man. Producer, Executive producer, writer and director, Vaughn also directed the X-Men: First Class. Notching 15 films as producer and only 10 as director, Vaughn appears to be smitten by the spy genre. After three Kingsman films, we now have the fourth, Argylle, which he also produced, like the Kingsman series and the X-Men film.

For most of Argylle, the director seems to be unsure whether it is to be a comedy, a spoof or an original spy thriller. Yes, the transformation of Elly from a house-wife-like character into a fighting mean machine persona is a mild tour de force. And just when you have written off Alfie, the cat, as a mere ‘passenger’, she gets to the eyes (literally). Aidan is not very convincing as the superhuman spy, and the role needed better casting. The title itself is not attractive, and the 139 minutes’ length gets to you. He brings back his Stardust actor Henry Cavill, only as a figment of Elly’s imagination. Fights are often unrealistic, with a dozen or more gunmen pouncing on one or two protagonists, and failing to match them. Alfie raises one laugh when he bounces from a mattress on a road up to a high storey window. The dance sequence is impressive and sensual.

Discovered by M. Night Shyamalam, and cast in two of his films, Bryce Dallas Howard (Pete's Dragon, Rocketman) is the daughter of actor-director Ron Howard. Elly Conway looks the dowdy novelist Elizabeth Conway, and metamorphoses into Rachel Kylle with ease. Both Bryce (42) and Sam Rockwell (Aidan), who is 55, belie their age. The villain-in-chief, Ritter, and his female half, Dr. Margaret Vogler, are played by Bryan Cranston and Catherine O’Hara. Both are made to behave in a clichéd manner, perhaps in the hope that they will come across as comedians. Nothing doing. Richard E. Grant plays Fowler, Ritter's book counterpart in the Argylle novels. Samuel L. Jackson as Alfie could have sleep-walked into this role. And Sofia Boutella as Saba Al-Badr is completely dispensable to the plot.

Cinematography is by George Richmond and the film is edited by Lee Smith, Tom Harrison-Read and Col Goudie, with music by Lorne Balfe. An Apple Original Films production there is neither any juicy apple in it nor originality. In fact, everybody who likes originality should keep away from this spyurious stuff.

"Bardejov" Unveils New Trailer and Poster; Hollywood's Top Stars Support New Film by Danny A. Abeckaser

Director Danny A. Abeckaser has unveiled the trailer and poster for his new film, the WWII drama Bardejov, in advance of its March 19th debut on digital.

The film stars Robert Davi, Danny A. Abeckaser, Dean Miroshnikov, Emma Renana Bardea, Kyle Stefanski, Omer Hazan, and Darren Weiss.

Many celebs are taking notice and sharing the news about this important film, including Gal Gadot.

Synopsis: Young Hlinka Guards disrupt a peaceful morning in Bardejov, plastering posters demanding that every Jew in town registers for work.

Rafuel Lowy, a rabbi and wine maker, meets with the Jewish council to make a plan of action against the Guard’s orders, keeping all boys in town in the brewery. After the town’s girls are able to sneak in and get boys out, with the rest released the next morning, another order is issued: all girls in the town must present themselves for work in a shoe factory in the East, with no exception. The streets erupt with chaos.

After Lowy discovers there is no shoe factory and the girls will be taken to Auschwitz, they plan to administer Typhus shots on the girls to force quarantine in the town and attempt to save the girls.
